
The 32-year-old was diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukemia in June and hasn’t pitched in the big leagues since May 30.
Carrasco will come out of the bullpen, giving manager Terry Francona another established pitcher he can turn to in the final month of the season.
Carrasco has a 4.98 ERA this season in 12 starts. He made three rehab appearances, allowing one run in 3⅔ innings.
The Indians activated Dan Otero from the 60-day injured list and recalled catcher Eric Haase from Triple-A Coumbus.
Otero has been on the injured list since May 30 with right shoulder inflammation. He posted a 4.56 ERA in 20 appearances prior to his injury.
Haase has spent most of the season with the Clippers. He’s tied for fifth in the International League with 28 home runs. Haase has posted a .226/.315/..517 slash line in 102 games.
The Indians also selected the contracts of Ryan Flaherty and James Hoyt. Flaherty, 33, has spent the entire season in Columbus, posting a .263 batting average (79-for-350), with 19 home runs and 73 RBI.
Hoyt is 2-0 with four saves and a 3.43 ERA in 40 relief appearances for the Clippers. He tossed 11⅓ scoreless innings in August, allowing just four hits.
