Thompson, 28, is in the final year of a five-year, $82 million contract. The Cavaliers could move the veteran for future assets including young players, draft picks or both.
The Mavericks, Raptors, Celtics, Clippers and Rockets are contending teams that could be looking to add a defensive specialist and a quality rebounder like Thompson.
He is averaging 11.9 points 10.4 rebounds per game this season. His postseason experience is appealing to playoff contenders.
Thompson was a late scratch for Monday night's game against the Knicks due to right quad soreness. He went through his normal pregame workout and ran into the locker room before the news was announced.
The Cavaliers are in “asset accumulation mode” according to Haynes.
Cleveland is also expected to field offers for John Henson, who will become a free agent this summer. Matthew Dellavedova, Ante Zizic and Brandon Knight are also on expiring deals, but probably won’t be coveted by other teams prior to the deadline.
Another player that could be on the move is Kevin Love, but his bloated contract could keep him in Cleveland. Love, 31, is in the first year of a four-year, $120 million extension. He’ll make $91.5 million over the next three seasons and is under contract until 2022-2023.
The Trail Blazers, Heat and Suns have all expressed some interest in Love dating back to last offseason, but it remains to be seen if Cavaliers general manager Koby Altman will be willing to take a couple of expiring contracts and a pick in return for the five-time All-Star.
Love is averaging 17.4 points, 9.8 rebounds and 2.9 assists per game this season.
