Zach Wilson is once again starting for the New York Jets after they turned to Tim Boyle in the last two weeks. Wilson was benched -- for the second year in a row -- after a dreadful performance in Buffalo, his third straight loss after the Jets started the season 4-3.
NFL Insider Brian Baldinger of the Audacy original podcast “In The Huddle” said this weekend’s start against Houston could be Wilson’s last chance to prove himself in the NFL.
“We’re just going to see can the Jets – back with Zach Wilson here – can they put up 13 points?” Baldinger said (33:45 in player above). “Because that might be all it takes to win this game. I don’t know if this can because they haven’t shown much signs of being able to score touchdowns, obviously, all year.”
The Jets held the Falcons to 13 points last week but lost 13-8 at home as they failed to score a touchdown. New York’s defense has kept them in some games but the offense hasn’t done enough at all this season.
Wilson has completed 59% of his passes this season with six touchdowns and seven interceptions. He’ll get a chance this weekend against a Texans defense that allows the second-most passing yards per game (275.2) in the league.
“I feel like this is do or die for Zach, not just for the Jets, but for his entire career,” Baldinger continued. “So if they’re ever going to get some kind of a good performance from Zach Wilson this is the week to do it. Just because they went back to him only because they realized they don’t have anything else. This is it. So Trevor Siemian, Tim Boyle just send them to the bus stop. This is it.”
The second overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft has been a massive disappointment for the Jets. A change of scenery may help Wilson in the offseason, but this could just be the player he is at the NFL level.
