Andrew Berry begins to clean house; Alonzo Highsmith, Eliot Wolf out

CLEVELAND, Ohio (92.3 The Fan) – Andrew Berry began cleaning house Wednesday morning, a day after being hired as executive vice president of football operations and general manager.

Vice president of player personnel Alonzo Highsmith and the Browns mutually agreed to part ways a league source told 92.3 The Fan’s Dustin Fox.

Director of College Scouting Steve Malin is also out according to Fox.

Same goes for assistant GM Eliot Wolf according to ESPN.

The team has not confirmed or announced the moves made by Berry.

Highsmith, Malin and Wolf didn’t fit the new front office model and philosophy moving forward spearheaded by chief strategy officer Paul DePodesta.

"I wanted to go in a different direction because my philosophy on football is different from theirs. I may go to Aruba, or go to the Masters. I'm going to take some time to do some fun stuff," Highsmith told ESPN's Josina Anderson. "I may also clean my garage, who knows. As far as football goes, I'll just have to wait to see what happens. I love all parts of the game. I've never been a title guy, working & contributing has always been my goal. So I do hope to return to the NFL."

Highsmith and Wolf were hired by Dorsey in 2018 and helped Dorsey restore credibility after the Browns became the laughingstock of the NFL compiling a 1-31 record over two seasons while assembling a multitude of draft picks and salary cap space under Sashi Brown.

Only five of the team’s 24 selections from 2016 and 2017 picked by Brown remain on the roster, but two of them made the Pro Bowl – linebacker Joe Schobert and defensive end Myles Garrett.

Wolf's father, former Packers Hall of Fame executive Ron Wolf, blasted the Browns in comments made to ESPN's Chris Mortenson.

"When something goes wrong, who takes responsibility? Their answer: `Well, that's what the data told us,'" Wolf reprotedly said. "What a crock. That's what got 'em 1-31."

Dorsey, with the help of Wolf and Highsmith completely blew out the roster assembled by Brown, keeping just six players Browns brought in, jettisoning a total of 44 members of the 53-man roster.

It remains to be seen how much of Dorsey’s roster Berry plans to blow out after the Browns insisted this would not be a roster rebuild.

Then again, they insisted they only wanted to change head coaches this offseason too.
