BEREA, Ohio (92.3 The Fan) – Baker Mayfield appears on target to start Sunday in Pittsburgh.
Mayfield threw during the 25 minutes of practice that was open to reporters Friday morning in Berea and did not appear to show much difficulty throwing with his normal velocity.
“I think he's trending in the right direction, but we have to make sure we're safe with this as this goes and use all the hours for treatment and see how he responds,” head coach Kevin Stefanski said.
At times Mayfield did appear to adjust whatever padding he had under his jersey after throws but he was a full participant in practice according to the team.
“He’s improving every day,” Stefanski said.
Mayfield threw for a season-high 247 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions in last week’s 32-23 win over the Colts.
Landry returns – Receiver Jarvis Landry returned to practice and was a full participant during the portion open to reporters.
Landry ran routes and caught passes with ease from Mayfield and Case Keenum, who alternated sides to throw from during drills.
“He's a very, very tough dude,” Stefanski said. “He spent a lot of time in the training room getting his body right. He’s making push to Sunday like he always does.”
Emergency punter – Jamie Gillan suffered a groin injury Thursday and is questionable Sunday meaning kicker Cody Parkey would likely handle punting too if needed.
“Something happened in practice and he’s on the treatment list,” Stefanski said. “Just gotta make sure he keeps getting treatment and see how the next 48 hours go.”
New QB – The Browns added quarterback Kyle Lauletta to the practice squad Friday.
Lauletta was originally selected by the New York Giants in the fourth round of the 2018 NFL Draft and he’s appeared in two games. He also spent time on the Eagles and Falcons practice squads.
