Browns Notes: Baker Mayfield limited by foot injury; keeps focus on football, not new contract

BEREA, Ohio (92.3 The Fan) – Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield was limited by more than just his left shoulder during practice Wednesday.

Mayfield revealed he is dealing with a foot injury.

“Just a little sore on my foot,” Mayfield said. “Nothing major by any means.”

Mayfield isn’t sure the genesis of his latest injury.

“It is just some nagging thing that has gone a little bit over time,” Mayfield said. “I do not know. It could be turf. It could be a lot of things. I will be alright.”

Mayfield, who completed 14 of 21 passes for 218 yards and a pair of touchdowns in a 41-16 win over the Bengals, continues to play with a harness for his left shoulder, which has a torn labrum and fracture at the top of the humerus bone.

“I definitely would say there is more comfort with that on,” Mayfield said. “Just as the weeks go on, it is going to continue to hopefully improve each day with the rehab and everything we are doing here. Yeah, more comfortable with that, and just trusting those guys down the field, as well.”

On Wednesday the Browns signed left guard Joel Bitonio to a three-year, $48 million extension and on Tuesday they locked up right guard Wyatt Teller for four years and $56.8 million bringing Mayfield’s contract situation back to the forefront.

Mayfield, selected No. 1 overall in the 2018 Draft is eligible for one after having the fifth-year option for the 2022 season exercised in April.

“Two extremely deserving guys of those extensions,” Mayfield said. “They deserve that. They protect me. They protect all of our guys. They are team-first guys. Joel has obviously been the consistent guy here for a long time, and Wyatt for the past few years.

“We are very happy to have them extended obviously, but that changes nothing with me. I am still trying to just find a way to win games, and everything else will take care of itself.”

Not ready – Kareem Hunt was eligible to return from injured reserve this week but is not ready.

“We will not have Kareem this week,” Stefanski said.

Hunt suffered a calf injury that is expected to keep him out a few more weeks. The most likely return date for hunt appears to be after the bye week December 12 against the Ravens.

JOK designated to return – The Browns designated rookie linebacker Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah to return from injured reserve.

Owusu-Koramoah missed the last three games due to a high ankle sprain.

“We will see how he does to make a determination whether he is available to us,” Stefanski said.

Chubb POW – Running back Nick Chubb was voted the FedEx Ground Player of the Week award winner Wednesday.

Chubb ran for 137 yards and two touchdowns in Sunday’s 41-16 win over the Bengals in Cincinnati.

Chubb is the second Brown to win the honor this season. D’Ernest Johnson won the award for his performance in a win over the Broncos in Week 7.

Injury report – DNP: DE Myles Garrett (foot), DT Malik Jackson (knee), WR Jarvis Landry (knee), DE Takkarist McKinley (groin); LIMITED: TE Harrison Bryant (thigh), DE Jadeveon Clowney (ankle, knee), QB Baker Mayfield (left shoulder, foot), C J.C. Tretter (knee), CB Greedy Williams (shoulder)

Up next – Practice Thursday.
