Kevin Stefanski on Baker Mayfield's return: “When he’s ready, he’s ready”

CLEVELAND, Ohio (92.3 The Fan) – The timeline for Baker Mayfield to return remains unclear.

While indications seem to point to Mayfield potentially returning next week to face the Steelers on Halloween, that is not set in stone.

Could Mayfield benefit from another week off?

“I do not know the exact answer to that,” Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski said Friday. “I would just tell you we are going to continue to listen to the medical staff on this. When he is ready, he is ready.”

Stefanski was even unable to say if Mayfield would practice Monday when the team returns from the long weekend.

Prior to Thursday night’s 17-14 win over the Broncos, Jay Glazer reported on FOX’s pregame show that Mayfield told him he had a fracture at the top of the humerus in addition to the torn labrum and that “I need that fracture to heal for me to get back out there.”

Stefanski indicated that the team was not caught off guard by the report and had knowledge of the extent of the injury when Mayfield practiced Tuesday.

Wednesday morning it was announced that Mayfield would not play.

Backup Case Keenum completed 21 of 31 passes for 199 yards and a touchdown in Mayfield’s place.

“The expectations for our positions do not change regardless of who is in there,” Stefanski said. “We have expectations for the quarterback and how they play, and I thought Case played well last night. He made good decisions. He spread the ball around and took care of the football.

“Really across the board, when D’Ernest is in there, we expect D’Ernest to do his job. Whomever it is that is in the starting lineup, we really expect them to do their job.”
