Justin Fields began his NFL career with two wins against the spread (ATS) in his first three starts.
His next 26 starts: 6-20.
Even with the 2-1 start — and a push in his 30th start — Fields had the fewest ATS wins of any NFL quarterbacks in their first 30 career starts since Jay Cutler also started 8-21-1 from 2006-09.
Cutler somehow got worse. The Bears failed to cover in eight of his next nine starts, giving the former first-round pick only nine ATS wins in his first 39 career starts.
Fields is getting better … for now.
Since a push in Week 4 against the Denver Broncos dropped him to 8-21-1, Fields has four ATS wins in his last five starts. Most recently, the Bears demolished +3 in a 15-point win over the Detroit Lions in Week 14 for a three-game ATS winning streak.
It’s the first three-game ATS winning streak of Fields’ career, and the first for the Bears since December 2020. It snapped the NFL’s longest active drought (47 games) without a winning streak of at least three games.
As of Tuesday’s NFL spreads at BetMGM, the Bears are a 3-point road underdog against the Cleveland Browns in Week 15. Another cover would be their first four-game streak since December 2018, also the longest streak among all teams.
The Browns, meanwhile, just had a four-game ATS winning streak from Week 8 through Week 11. It was their first since September 2018.
