CLEVELAND, Ohio (92.3 The Fan) – Head coach Kevin Stefanski shook up part of his offensive coaching staff this offseason but the one assistant he hoped to keep is leaving the Browns to go work for his son.
Offensive line coach Bill Callahan is being permitted to interview and be hired by the Tennessee Titans a league source confirmed to 92.3 The Fan Thursday evening.
Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com first reported the news.
The departure of Bill Callahan had been speculated since the Titans named his son, Brian, as their new head coach, replacing Mike Vrabel last month.
The loss of Bill Callahan appears to be a bit of a 180. Just over a week ago a league source indicated to 92.3 The Fan that they expected Callahan would remain in Cleveland.
Bill Callahan was hired by Stefanski in 2020 and he transformed the Browns offensive line into one of the league’s best units that included Pro Bowl guards Joel Bitonio and Wyatt Teller. Center Ethan Pocic was named a Pro Bowl alternate this year as well.
“Coach Callahan's been instrumental for us,” Bitonio said last week at the 24th Greater Cleveland Sports Awards. “I think he's helped develop a bunch of us on the line. We're thankful for that. He's one of the hardest workers I know he puts in the time with us and he's a big part of the run game and the scheme and protections.
“But then your son gets hired as the head coach and I know we have – the organization, the players – we appreciate what he's done and hopefully he's here for us next year. But if your son calls, you might need to take that phone call as well. That's pretty special stuff, so I think we understand either way.”
It is expected that Bill Callahan will assume the same role in Tennessee as the Titans offensive line coach.
