Browns acquire kicker Dustin Hopkins from Chargers, plan to cut Cade York

CLEVELAND, Ohio (92.3 The Fan) – The Browns have acquired veteran kicker Dustin Hopkins from the Los Angeles Chargers and plan to cut kicker Cade York a league source confirmed to 92.3 The Fan.

The moves were first reported by Adam Schefter and Jordan Schultz and announced by the team Monday afternoon.


The Chargers will receive a 2025 seventh round selection for Hopkins from the Browns.

The trade is pending a physical.

York, selected in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft, was inconstant as a rookie making 24 of 32 field goal tries which carried into this preseason. York was perfect in practice situations but he missed potential game-winning kicks against the Eagles and Chiefs.

The trade for LA paves the way for Cameron Dicker to open as the Chargers Week 1 kicker.

York likely will be officially cut on Tuesday.

Hopkins, who spent 6 1/2 seasons with Washington and the last 1 1/2 with LA, enters his tenth NFL season where he has made 84.8% of his field goal tries, including 15 of 30 from beyond 50 yards.

Since joining the Chargers, Hopkins has made 27 of 30 field goal tries, including 1 of 3 from beyond 50 yards, over 16 games. He finished the 2022 season n injured reserve with a hamstring injury.

Hopkins was originally a sixth-round pick by Buffalo in the 2013 NFL Draft and has appeared in 109 career games.

In addition to the trade, the Browns also placed guard Drew Forbes on the reserve/non-football ilness list and terminated the contract of guard Wes Martin.

The Browns roster currently stands at 75. Teams must reduce their rosters to 53 by 4 p.m. eastern Tuesday.
