Browns add Eagles’ Dennard Wilson to defensive coordinator search

CLEVELAND, Ohio (92.3 The Fan) – The Cleveland Browns search for defensive coordinator is back up to four candidates.

The team requested permission on Wednesday to interview Philadelphia Eagles defensive pass game coordinator Dennard Wilson, prior to New England Patriots linebackers coach Jerod Mayo withdrawing from consideration, a league source confirmed to 92.3 The Fan.

Wilson is the only known new name that has been added to the team’s list.

The Browns requested permission to interview Mayo on Monday but withdrew late in the week after the Patriots announced they were working on redoing his contract to keep him New England’s staff.

Wilson has been with the Eagles since 2021 when he was hired as their defensive backs coach. He added pass game coordinator duties this past season.

Prior to moving to Philadelphia, Wilson began his coaching career with the St. Louis and Los Angeles Rams in 2012 where he spent five seasons as a defensive quality control coach and defensive backs coach. The New York Jets hired him in 2017 as their defensive backs coach and he added pass game coordinator duties in 2019.

Wilson also spent four years as a pro scout for the Chicago Bears from 2008-2011.

Former Detroit Lions head coach and Tennessee Titans senior defensive assistant Jim Schwartz interviewed for the job Wednesday and Pittsburgh Steelers senior defensive assistant and linebackers coach Brian Flores Thursday.

Flores’ interview with the Browns shows his legitimate interest in the job despite being added to the Arizona Cardinals interview list for their head coaching opening this week.

The Browns also requested permission and plan to interview Seattle Seahawks associate head coach and defensive assistant Sean Desai. Seattle plays the 49ers in San Francisco Saturday afternoon in an NFC Wild Card game.

Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski is in search of a new defensive coordinator after firing Joe Woods Sunday night following a 28-14 loss to the Steelers to finish the season 7-10.
