CLEVELAND, Ohio (92.3 The Fan) – The Browns closed their facility Friday after a player's test results came back positive for COVID-19.
It marks the first time since mid-August the team has had a player or coach test positive.
For now, Friday's practice has been called off and meetings are being conducted remotely while contract tracing is being done to determine the next steps.
The team issued the following statement:
“Earlier this morning, the Cleveland Browns were informed that a player’s test results have come back positive for COVID-19. The individual has immediately self-isolated and the Browns facility is closed this morning while contact tracing is being conducted. The team will continue to hold meetings remotely (part of the NFL-NFLPA intensive protocol) and will consult with the league and medical experts on the appropriate next steps as the health and safety of our players, coaches, staff and the entire community remains our highest priority.”
The Browns began the NFL's intensive protocols during the bye week when a staffer tested positive last weekend.
Quarterback Baker Mayfield was placed on and returned from the reserve COVID-19 list after contact tracing showed he was in close contact with the staffer that tested positive. Mayfield's tests over five days came back negative allowing for his return.
Under the protocols, close contacts of those that test positive are required to be isolated for five days.
The Browns are scheduled to host the Houston Texans Sunday afternoon at FirstEnergy Stadium however multiple players and or coaches may be forced to miss the game depending on the results of the contact tracing.
