Browns players to skip in-person workouts this offseason

CLEVELAND, Ohio (92.3 The Fan) – Browns players will not attend in-person workouts this offseason.

The announcement came through the NFLPA Thursday on behalf of Browns players as they join a growing list of teams around the league to elect to skip the voluntary program.

Browns center and NFLPA president JC Tretter has said repeatedly that he is encouraging players to skip the voluntary workouts this offseason and has called for permanent changes to the NFL's offseason program going forward.

“The NFL’s memo outlining how they plan to implement voluntary workouts falls short of what we as players believe is adequate,” the statement released through the NFLPA said. “The Cleveland Browns players agree that a virtual offseason, like we had last year, is the best decision for everyone in our league.

“COVID-19 continues to affect our players, our families and our communities, and we must continue to take it seriously. In addition to the ongoing threat of the pandemic, we felt healthier both mentally and physically last year, which we attribute to sufficient recovery time and the lack of additional wear and tear on our bodies during the spring months. The league-wide injury data supports us as well, as NFL players experienced a 23% reduction in missed-time injuries last season.

“For these reasons, we stand in solidarity with players from other clubs by exercising our CBA right to not attend in-person voluntary workouts this offseason. We are professionals who train year-round, wherever we spend our offseason. As we proved last year, we will be ready to compete this upcoming season.”

As the player's statement referenced, Tretter has cited the continuing COVID-19 pandemic as to why offseason workouts should not be conducted this year around the NFL and lower missed-time injuries and concussions in 2020 following a virtual offseason as to why the offseason program needs to be overhauled going forward.

The offseason program is scheduled to begin Monday.

The Broncos, Seahawks, Buccaneers, Lions, Bears and Patriots are among the teams who have also announced they will not participate in the voluntary in-person workouts this offseason.
