CLEVELAND, Ohio (92.3 The Fan) – The Browns terminated the contract of veteran defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson.

The move, which comes day after the team signed defensive end Jadeveon Clowney, saves the team $12 million in cap space that Richardson was scheduled to make in salary on workout bonuses this year.

Richardson, who was entering the final year of a three year contract, signed with Cleveland as an unrestricted free agent in 2019.

Richardson started all 16 games last season and totaled 64 tackles, 4.5 sacks and a forced fumble.

Originally selected by the Jets in the first round of the 2013 NFL Draft, Richardson was voted the 2013 NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year, named a Pro Bowler in 2014.

The local chapter of the Pro Football Writers of America voted Richardson the 2019 PFWA Dino Lucarelli Good Guy award winner for his work in the community and candor with reporters.
