Browns waive kickers Chase McLaughlin and Chris Blewitt following selection of Cade York in Draft

CLEVELAND Ohio (92.3 The Fan) – As if there was any doubt Cade York would be the Browns kicker this season, it was removed Monday.

The Browns waived kickers Chase McLaughlin and Chris Blewitt, handing the job to York.

Cleveland selected York in the fourth round, No. 124 overall, in the 2022 NFL Draft Saturday. it was the highest selection for a kicker in a draft since since Roberto Aguayo in 2016.

McLaughlin, who was re-signed this offseason, started last season by hitting his first nine field goal tries but made just six of his last 12 tries down the stretch. He was 36 of 37 on PATs over 16 games in 2021.

Blewitt appeared in two games with Washington in 2021, before joining the Browns’ practice squad prior to Week 17.

Over three seasons at LSU, York left as one of the best kickers in program history making 54 of 66 field goals and 164 of 168 PATs.

Aside from accuracy, the Browns were attracted to York’s big leg. He hit 15 field goals from over 50 yards, including a school-record, game-winning 57 yarder in the fog to beat No. 6 Florida State in December 2020.
