CLEVELAND, Ohio (92.3 The Fan) – Deshaun Watson has reversed course and rocked the football world.
In a stunning move, Watson has agreed to waive his no-trade clause to join the Cleveland Browns a league source confirmed to 92.3 The Fan.
NFL Network reports that Watson will receive a fully guaranteed five-year, $230 million contract, shattering Aaron Rodgers' league record for guaranteed cash by nearly $80 million, as part of the agreement.
Watson posted to his Instagram account, “Cleveland, LETSSSS GOOOO!! #Dawgpound Ready To Work!”
The Browns and Texans have finalized terms of the trade. Cleveland receives Watson and a 2024 fifth-round pick. Houston will receive the Browns' first round picks in the 2022, 2023 and 2024 NFL Drafts along with a 2023 third-round pick and 2024 fourth round selection a source confirmed to 92.3 The Fan.
Thursday morning, Watson informed the Browns they were no longer in consideration after the two sides met Tuesday in Houston.
Browns ownership along with EVP/GM Andrew Berry and head coach Kevin Stefanski sold Watson on their strong roster that saw them acquire four-time Pro Bowl receiver Amari Cooper to join Pro Bowlers Nick Chubb, Myles Garrett, Denzel Ward, Joel Bitonio and Wyatt Teller.
The Saints, Falcons and Panthers also bid for Watson, who is still facing accusations of sexual misconduct involving 22 women during therapeutic massage treatments in civil court. Last Friday a grand jury elected not to indict Watson following eight criminal complaints made against him.
Watson still faces potential discipline from the NFL for possible violations of the league's conduct policy.
Watson, selected 12th overall by the Texans in the 2017 NFL Draft following a trade with the Browns for the pick, did not play last season because of the trade request and the sexual assault and harassment allegations.
Although Watson evaded criminal prosecution, he may not escape discipline from the NFL office, but a potential suspension and the negative reaction – especially from women and victims of sexual assault, are risks the Browns clearly are willing to take.
On the field, Watson has completed over 67.8% of his passes and thrown for 14,539 yards with 104 touchdowns and just 36 interceptions in 54 games. He has also rushed for 1,677 yards and 17 touchdowns while holding a 28-25-0 record as a starter.
With Watson, who led the NFL with 4,823 passing yards, in 2020, on board, the Browns will now trade Baker Mayfield, who wrote a thank you and goodbye letter to Cleveland Tuesday night and formally requested a trade Thursday afternoon.
