BEREA, Ohio (92.3 The Fan) – The return of safety Grant Delpit was brief.
Delpit aggravated the hamstring injury that kept him out at the start of camp Wednesday afternoon.
Delpit appeared to come up limping following a long completion to receiver Davion Davis early in team drills before walking with a trainer inside.
Delpit, a 2020 second-round pick out of LSU, had just returned to the field on Tuesday after missing his entire rookie season due to a torn Achilles suffered last August.
Light work – Wednesday’s practice mirrored Tuesday in that it was short – an hour and 20 minutes in length – and light, thus the highlights were few and far between.
Head coach Kevin Stefanski took it easy on his team after flying home from Jacksonville Sunday and leading up to a tough end to the week against the New York Giants.
Team 11-on-11 work was contactless and not always at full speed either.
Be our guest – The Giants roll into town for joint practices at CrossCountry Mortgage Campus in Berea Thursday and Friday.
“They’re our guests,” Stefanski said.
The Giants will use the visitor locker room facilities at FirstEnergy Stadium and bus to and from Berea for practice.
Stefanski and Giants head coach Joe Judge have planned for two-hour sessions both days which will include 1-on-1 drills, two-minute, red zone and other situational team periods.
“You are working together to make sure you get good work,” Stefanski said.
The relationship between Stefanski and Judge dates back to their younger days in Philadelphia where they were briefly classmates and teammates. Stefanski also played with Judge’s brother, Jim.
“I know what Joe’s about and what he believes in, so there’s that relationship there where we know our two teams,” Stefanski said. “I think you can get good, productive work when you have that.”
To that point, Stefanski has emphasized to his players to conduct themselves professionally in the hopes of limiting the fighting that tends to break out when two teams hit the practice field.
“We want to make sure that we work, we work hard and we compete against each other, but we are always going to be taking care of each other and making sure that it is a safe, controlled environment,” Stefanski said.
Browns linebacker Anthony Walker was with the Colts when the Browns visited in 2019 under former head coach and current Giants assistant Freddie Kitchens and a slew of fights broke out between the teams.
“Obviously, this is our home field and we gotta protect it no matter what,” Walker said. “Like I said, we’re going to keep it at football and go out and compete and have fun. It’s a game at the end of the day, and we’ll leave it at that.”
That’s all, folks – Wednesday’s practice marked the final session open to fans.
Following the workout several players walked over to the stands to wave to fans and say thank you.
COVID protocols limited the team to a capacity of 2,000 per session and also did not allow for the normal player-fan interactions that occur, including autographs.
Final puppy pound count – Six more puppies were adopted Wednesday bringing the 2021 camp total to 53. Since the program’s launch in 2015, 625 puppies from the Northeast Ohio Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) have been adopted by Browns fans at training camp.
Injury report – WR Ja’Marcus Bradley (neck), G Michael Dunn (back), LB Tony Fields II (foot), DE Myles Garrett (hamstring), S Sheldrick Redwine (ankle), CB M.J. Stewart Jr. (hamstring), CB Denzel Ward (soreness).
DE Jadeveon Clowney, WR JoJo Natson, CB Denzel Ward and OL Chris Hubbard also did not practice.
Up next – Practice Thursday afternoon at 2:25.
