BEREA, Ohio (92.3 The Fan) – It appears the Browns got some good news concerning cornerback Greedy Williams Monday.
Williams suffered an injury to his right shoulder, the same one that forced him to miss the entire 2020 season due to nerve damage, in Sunday’s 41-16 win over the Bengals in Cincinnati.
Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski said Monday that Williams is “day to day” with the injury but the relationship to the previous injury is unclear.
“I hesitate to say it is the same thing, but it is all connected,” Stefanski said. “It was acting up, and we will see how he responds over the next couple of days.”
Up again – Running back Nick Chubb was nominated for the third time this season for the FedEx ground player of the week award after he helped carry the Browns to a 41-16 win over the Bengals Sunday.
Chubb ran for 137 yards and 2 touchdowns, including a 70-yard score, on just 14 carries in the victory. It was his 20th career 100-yard game, ranking him third in team history behind Leroy Kelly and Jim Brown.
With the 2 touchdowns Sunday, Chubb, who now has 34 career rushing TDs, passed Otto Graham for the fifth-most rushing touchdowns in franchise history.
Lack of focus – While Stefanski was pleased with the complimentary football played Sunday in Cincinnati, he continues to be bothered by penalties, especially pre-snap penalties.
Defensively the Browns were called for offsides three times in the first 11 plays to start the game
“We are not a disciplined football team right now when it comes to penalties, and we have got to get it fixed,” Stefanski said. “We are very close to being worst in the league, and that is an undisciplined team. That is what losing looks like. We have to clean that up because it is going to come back and bite you if we do not.”
Salute to Service – Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield was named the Browns nominee for the NFL’s annual Salute to Service award for his work honoring local servicemen, servicewomen, and veterans.
Mayfield honored fallen Ohio native and U.S. Navy corpsman Maxton Soviak by wearing custom cleats during warmups for the Browns home opener against Houston. Since 2018, Mayfield has participated in honoring and speaking with military members during the Browns Training Camp Military Appreciation Day.
Mayfield has also assembled care packages for troops overseas as part of the Browns Salute to Service First and Ten Tuesday visit and recorded a military appreciation message for service members in attendance of our 2020 Salute to Service Game.
Finalists for the award are scheduled to be announced in January. The recipient will be recognized at the NFL Honors awards show, which is set to air the week of the Super Bowl.
No updates yet – Stefanski did not have an update on linebacker Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah and running back Kareem Hunt. Both players are eligible to come off injured reserve this week.
Owusu-Koramoah has been out with a high ankle sprain and is more likely to return this week than Hunt, who was expected to mis 4-6 weeks with a calf injury.
Roster moves – The Browns waived cornerback Herb Miller and placed running back John Kelly on Reserve/COVID-19. Receiver Lawrence Cager was also placed on Practice Squad/COVID-19.
Injury report – DE Takk McKinley (groin), CB Greedy Williams (shoulder)
Up next – Players off Tuesday, practice Wednesday.
