BEREA, Ohio (92.3 The Fan) – With the amount of time that Jadeveon Clowney spent in the backfield Tuesday, he and Baker Mayfield should be best friends by now.
The good news for Mayfield is that he is off limits to defenders otherwise Clowney might have registered double digit sacks on the first day in pads, in addition to giving Mayfield a bad case of sore ribs.
Clowney was overpowering at times up front and seemed to be in the backfield on just about every play during team 11-on-11 drills.
The Browns signed Clowney, who is fully recovered from a torn meniscus that limited him to eight games with the Titans last year, in April to a one-year contract that could pay up to $10 million with incentives.
It’s day one in pads and so we’ll keep things in perspective because there’s a long way to go, but on a daily basis – pads or no pads – we’re seeing the potential damage the pairing of Clowney and Myles Garrett may be able to do this season.
Day for the D – Aside from Clowney’s dominance, the defense had themselves a day, especially the secondary.
After receiver KhaDarel Hodge, who seems to make a play daily, ripped off a double move to beat a pair of DBs for a 46-yard touchdown from Mayfield during an 11-on-11 series early in practice, the defense clamped down.
During red zone work, safety Jovante Moffatt and linebacker Jacob Phillips broke up passes. Moffatt got some first-team reps with Ronnie Harrison, Sheldrick Redwine and Grant Delpit on the side while Phillips assumed Anthony Walker’s spot at MIKE linebacker.
Linebacker Mack Wilson made the play of the day when he jumped in front of tight end David Njoku to haul in an interception of Mayfield in the end zone.
Mayfield struggled to complete a pass during a 7-on-7 series that saw him voice his frustration afterwards.
Back on track – After a rough start last week that saw him make just one of five kicks, Cody Parkey has bounced back nicely and hasn’t missed a kick since.
Parkey and Chase McLaughlin made all five of their kicks during Tuesday’s field goal period.
Tretter returns – Center JC Tretter was back on the field and a full participant Tuesday after missing Monday’s practice with an illness.
JOK activated – Rookie linebacker Jeremiah Owusu Koramoah was activated from reserve/COVID-19 Tuesday.
The second-round pick landed on the list July 25, a day after reporting. He was limited to individual work.
“He has been definitely brought up to speed,” Browns head coach Stefanski said. “I will tell you, it is kind of like last year when we finally got the guys, there is a difference between virtual and doing. He is similarly going to have to have a sense of urgency to pick things up. He understands what is at stake and the work that needs to be put into it. He will be just fine.”
OBJ idle – Browns receiver Odell Beckham Jr. was not in pads Tuesday as the team continues to take a structured approach to his full return. Although Beckham wasn’t on the field working, he was engaged and spent a lot of time talking to teammates during practice.
Buzzing camp – There was a buzz in the air Tuesday, literally.
Aerial Agents, a local drone company that captures aerial photos and footage around Cleveland, is back capturing images for the Browns multimedia department which can be seen in the team’s docuseries ‘Building the Browns,’ ‘Browns Live’ show as well as social media channels.
Tom Wasinski operates the drones and can view the footage live remotely. It was good he had a backup because one of his drones crash landed after clipping a tree branch prior to practice getting under way.

Quote of the day – “Man, you’ve got to ask, God, bro. I don’t know, bro. It’s just smooth. You know? Baker’s my guy, and when you need a play, man, you call God, and then you can call me.” Browns receiver Rashard Higgins’ response to being asked why he has great chemistry with Mayfield.
Stretch it out – Tuesday’s practice went 15 minutes longer than Monday’s session as the Browns work deeper into camp they’ll be lengthening their practices, 15 minutes at a time.
Injury report – Tony Fields II (foot), S Ronnie Harrison Jr. (hamstring), S Sheldrick Redwine (ankle), WR Anthony Schwartz (hamstring) and LB Anthony Walker Jr. (knee) did not practice.
RB Tre Harbison left practice on a cart and is being evaluated for concussion.
Puppy pound counter – Three puppies were adopted Tuesday brining the 2021 total to 22. Since the program’s launch in 2015, 594 puppies from the Northeast Ohio Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) have been adopted by Browns fans at training camp.
Up next – Practice Wednesday at 2:25.
