CLEVELAND, Ohio (92.3 The Fan) – The Browns reduced their roster to the mandated 53 in advance of the 4 p.m. eastern deadline to do so Tuesday.
Among the cuts, an end of an era – fullback Johnny Stanton IV. It’s the price head coach Kevin Stefanski, an unabashed fan of the fullback, pays to keep five running backs.
Unsurprisingly, quarterback Josh Rosen was also among the cuts. Rosen was signed just before training camp. The Browns will likely add a third quarterback to the practice squad on Wednesday.
Undrafted free agent D’Anthony Bell made the team, making him the first under EVP/GM Andrew Berry to make the first 53 in three years. The safety had an outstanding camp and preseason that saw the safety force a pair of fumbles.
In total 17 players were waived and two saw their contract terminated.
Among those waived in addition to Stanton and Rosen were defensive tackle Rodrick Perry II, linebackers Willie Harvey Jr. and Dakota Allen, defensive backs Shaun Jolly, Herb Miller and Lavert Hill (injured), receivers Daylen Baldwin, Easop Winston and Mike Harley Jr., tight ends Nakia Griffin-Stewart, Zaire Mitchell-Paden and Miller Forristall as well as offensive linemen Blake Hance, Brock Hoffman, David Moore Jr. and Alex Taylor.
Quarterback Deshaun Watson was placed on the reserve/suspended by the commissioner list to complete the roster reduction.
Additional roster moves, including the formation of the practice squad, will be made Wednesday. Teams have until noon Wednesday to place claims on players waived Tuesday.
