CLEVELAND, Ohio (92.3 The Fan) – The Browns second preseason game has all the excitement of what used to be the fourth preseason game but there is plenty to watch for Sunday afternoon at FirstEnergy Stadium.
Head coach Kevin Stefanski won’t play many starters – if any, which means opportunity knocks for the back end of the roster to make an impression
Here’s a look a four things we’ll be watching for.
First the quarterbacks. It always comes back to quarterbacks, doesn’t it? And we have another battle on our hands – to be Jacoby Brissett’s backup. Josh Dobbs and Josh Rosen will split the four quarters, although Stefanski declined to specify how. Dobbs, who rallied the offense in Jacksonville, appears to have the edge based on camp reps to date, and he’s been here longer, but if history is any indication, a good outing from Rosen would make everyone feel better about the depth chart there.
The receivers behind Amari Cooper aren’t exactly setting the world on fire during training camp. Part of that is youth and inexperience. Part of it has to do with early camp injuries and fewer reps. But they are being counted on – mostly Anthony Schwartz, Donovan peoples-Jones and rookie David Bell. Time is running short to show they can be the contributors while Daylen Baldwin, who signed early in camp, has had some nice practices. Can he bring that to game day?
Can the kids do it again? The rookies stole the show in the preseason opener against the Jaguars. Case York made all of his kicks. Martin Emerson Jr. had a rip-six, Jerome Ford scored a pair of touchdowns and ripped off a 41-yard run, and Isaiah Thomas had a pair of sacks and tackle for loss. Thomas likely won’t play after suffering an injury that has his right hand in a cast but another strong showing from the rookies could go a long way.
The summer event series at FirstEnergy Stadium that included a concert, Monster Truck Jam and Top Golf did not allow the grounds crew much time to get the field installed and playable. With rain in the forecast all day Sunday and the field less than a week old, footing could be an issue.
