Browns Notes: Kareem Hunt, Troy Hill “unlikely” to be available on short week for Raiders

BEREA, Ohio (92.3 The Fan) – Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski all but ruled out running back Kareem Hunt and slot corner Troy Hill for Saturday’s game against the Las Vegas Raiders.

“They’re unlikely to make it this week on the short week,” Stefanski said Monday.

Stefanski indicated that both players were “week to week” with injuries suffered during their 24-22 win over the Ravens Sunday.

Hunt suffered an ankle injury with just over 2 minutes left in the first quarter when Ravens safety Geno Stone hit him low while making a 5-yard catch at the Baltimore 14 and he did not return.

“That is the nature of the beast,” Stefanski said. “Obviously, you hate injuries, and the competitor that Kareem is, you hate that he is going through this, but he has to rehab and get back as soon as he can.”

Hunt, who had two catches for 13 yards and rushed twice for 5 yards in the victory, underwent an MRI Monday.

Hill suffered an injury while tackling Ravens receiver Devin Duvernay at the Baltimore 36 following an 11-yard completion with under 5 minutes remaining.

Second half crash – The Browns were able to hang on Sunday to beat the Ravens, but an alarming trend has formed – after halftime, they go in the tank.

“It is certainly something that we talk about internally where we can be better – offense, defense and special teams – to put those games away, and that is what we need to do,” Stefanski said.

Opponents are outscoring the Browns 105-52 in the fourth quarter and just seven of those points scored have come since Week 6. In the second half the opposition holds a 170-103 advantage.

“We do have to be better. That is obvious,” Stefanski said. “That is a team stat. Offense, defense and special teams, we have to be better through all four quarters. We are looking for that 60-minute game. The adjustments that you make, they really happen within series and within quarters. It is not like you get in at halftime and you wholesale change things. You have really good discussion and you talk about where you are going, but really, all of those adjustments should be happening in the middle of the second quarter, in the middle of the third quarter and so on.

“We do have to do better. That is our focus. We have to finish.”

Sticking with Chase – The Browns do not have plans to work out kickers this week according to Stefanski after Chase McLaughlin doinked a 41-yard try off the right upright.

“Obviously, you want to make them all, and Chase is hard on himself. He wants to make them all,” Stefanski said. “He is counting on them. We know that. Another big game this week, like you mentioned, and they are close games so he has to come through for us. That is no different than Week 1. I think he understands all of that.”

It was McLaughlin’s fourth miss in the last six games since he started the year making his first nine tries. McLaughlin has also had a PAT blocked.

Injury report – Cornerback Greg Newsome II and receiver Anthony Schwartz remain in the concussion protocol according to Stefanski. Tight end Harrison Bryant’s high ankle sprain suffered November 28 is improving. Safety Ronnie Harrison Jr. tested his injured ankle in pregame but wasn’t able to play. Stefanski did not have an update on tight end David Njoku, linebacker Anthony Walker Jr. and punter Jamie Gillan, who are on the COVID-19 reserve list.

Up next – Practice Tuesday.
