CLEVELAND, Ohio (92.3 The Fan) – The Detroit Lions hired former Browns general manager John Dorsey Wednesday.

Dorsey has been named a senior personnel executive by the club.

Dorsey served as general manager for the Browns from December 2017-December 2019.

His biggest moves involved the selection of quarterback Baker Mayfield No. 1 overall along with cornerback Denzel Ward fourth as well as running back Nick Chubb in the second round of the 2018 NFL Draft.

Dorsey made a flurry of trades in his two years in Cleveland to help rebuild a talent depleted Browns roster including acquiring receivers Jarvis Landry in a March 2018 trade with Miami and Odell Beckham Jr. from the Giants in a blockbuster deal that shook the NFL.

One of Dorsey’s most controversial moves came in February 2019 when he signed running back Kareem Hunt three months after he was released from the Chiefs following the publication of security footage that showed Hunt shove and kick a woman outside a downtown Cleveland apartment in February 2019. Dorsey picked Hunt, who led the NFL in rushing as a rookie in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft. Hunt earned a two-year extension from the Browns last fall.

The multitude of players acquired by Dorsey were instrumental in helping the Browns end an 18-year playoff drought this past season however his decision to hire Freddie Kitchens as head coach in January 2019 was a major factor in his departure. Kitchens was fired following a 6-10 finish after just 1 season.

Dorsey spent 2020 working as a consultant with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Prior to being hired by the Browns, Dorsey served as general manager of the Kansas City Chiefs from 2013-16.
