BEREA, Ohio (92.3 The Fan) – Browns defensive end Myles Garrett returned Friday.
Garrett was excused by the organization for the previous four practices to tend to a family mater.
Garrett participated in some individual drills before walking into the field house and later coming back out to watch practice from the side.
Cooper and consistency – The concern about the receiver position seems to be warranted but there’s nothing to worry about when it comes to Amari Cooper.
Cooper consistently made plays for Jacoby Brissett Friday afternoon, including catching the first two touchdowns in the opening 7-on-7 period against the Eagles defense.
“You can tell he's a veteran,” Cooper said. “The thing I really like about Jacoby is he understands concepts from a receiver's perspective, so it makes it really easy to communicate well.”
In 11-on-11, Brissett threw a pair of touchdowns to David Njoku, who was unable to haul one in during 7-on-7 from Deshaun Watson but the two-minute offense struggled due to penalties and poor execution late in practice.
“Typically, when you practice against another team you go out there, you look good the first day and the second day it's not so good, so that's what we're focusing on right now, we're trying to go out there and be consistent,” Cooper said. “Those are teams that are good, consistent teams. It's easy to go 8-8 in this league -- well, 17 games now -- easy to be in the middle of the pack but it's hard to be consistent so that's what you need to be to be great in this league, that's what we're trying to do.”
Simply the best – Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni doesn’t like to discuss players on another team, but he made an exception Friday when asked about Brissett.
“He’s the best,” Sirianni said. "My kids still ask, ‘How’s Jacoby doing?’ My wife still asks about him. He’s just a great leader and a great guy to be around. I always thought this about Jacoby and I guess I’m not supposed to be talking about … I don’t really want to talk about other people’s teams, but Jacoby and I are close. Jacoby is special to me so I don’t mind doing this with him. And so I always thought of him as such a good leader; such a good teammate; such a great guy to be around every day.”
Sirianni coached Brissett in Indianapolis when he was the Colts offensive coordinator from 2018-2020.
Almost perfect – Cade York made 7-of-8 field goal tries against the Eagles during team period.
His miss Friday came from about 55 yards.
York, named the Maurice Bassett award winner as the top rookie in camp, has made 35-of-38 during competitive special teams work to date.
“He has a great way about him,” Stefanski said before practice. “He does not get too high and does not get too low. His teammates really like him. I think that is just kind of how he carries himself around the building.”
While taking turns with Jake Elliott, York made 12-of-13 with his lone miss coming from midfield – making it a 60-yard try before he hit three in a row from a similar spot.
Brown gets Greedy – Greedy Williams had a jump ball ripped from him by Philadelphia’s A.J. Brown on a fade from Jalen Hurts for a touchdown. After the catch, Brown stood over Williams for a few seconds.
Brown had a great practice working against the Browns secondary.
False start – Left tackle Jedrick Wills Jr. was pulled by Kevin Stefanski during a 2-minute drill for being flagged for multiple penalties. Offensive line coach Bill Callahan spoke with Wills along with a few teammates after he got the hook.
Notable quotable – “He’s still the wizard,” running back Nick Chubb said about running backs coach Stump Mitchell.
Roll call – WR Anthony Schwartz, WR Michael Woods II, CB Greg Newsome II, S Grant Delpit, RB Kareem Hunt, FB Johnny Stanton IV, DE Isaiah Thomas, DE Chase Winovich, OT Chris Hubbard and RT Jack Conklin did not practice Friday.
Up next – Preseason Game No. 2 vs. Eagles Sunday at 1 p.m.
