CLEVELAND, Ohio (92.3 The Fan) – There was no mistaking where the 2021 NFL Draft was taking place Thursday night.
Browns fans were barking and chanting “Pittsburgh sucks” before the commissioner even took the stage.
Flanked by Browns legends Joe Thomas and Bernie Kosar as well as current receiver Jarvis Landry, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell was greeted with a strong chorus of boos as he stepped to the podium and began his welcome speech.
Goodell couldn’t get through his introduction because he was drowned out by chants of “Bernie, Bernie” prompting the commissioner to pause and acknowledge Kosar mid-sentence.
Goodell made way for Thomas to step to the podium where he led fans in “Here we go Brownies” chants.
Goodell invited Landry and Thomas to select a Jaguars fan from the vaccinated crowd to sit in Goodell’s chair, which became famous during last year’s virtual draft run from his basement, while the team was on the clock. As each team was on the clock, one of their fans was selected to sit in Goodell’s chair.
Once Goodell officially opened the draft, there were no surprises with the first two picks and the smoke cleared quickly at No. 3.
Now led by former Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer, the Jacksonville Jaguars selected Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence No. 1 overall to turn their franchise around.
Lawrence won 34 games in three seasons at Clemson, including a national championship in 2018.
The Jets selected BYU quarterback Zach Wilson with the No. 2 pick and North Dakota State quarterback Trey Lance was picked by the 49ers third overall.
