CLEVELAND, Ohio (92.3 The Fan) – The market for Baker Mayfield continues to be thin – at best – for now.
The Seattle Seahawks aren’t in a rush to trade for Mayfield – or any quarterback at this time according to comments made by head coach Pete Carroll on the Ian Furness Show on 93.3 FM KJR Radio in Seattle Thursday.
“I don’t see us making a trade for anybody at all,” Carroll told Furness on KJR. “I don’t see that happening but we’re always certainly going to be open to chances to help our club and meanwhile we’ll just be battling and competing our tails off.
“There’s always a possibility so we keep open to that.”
Furness followed up and asked about a scenario that involves potentially adding a quarterback that might become a free agent, such as Mayfield assuming the Browns just release him.
“There’s no chance I’m going to tell you anything than I already told you, but I love you for trying,” Carroll said laughing. “Honestly, we’re going to keep looking and seeing what is available but only to help our club and make us better. If the case presents itself, we’re going to be ready for it.”
The Seahawks signed Levi Lewis as an undrafted free agent after passing on quarterbacks in the draft. They have Drew Lock, Geno Smith and Jacob Eson also on their roster.
On a webcast that was released last month, Mayfield said the Seahawks were the “most likely option” for him after the Colts passed on him and traded with the Falcons for soon to be 37-year-old Matt Ryan.
Carlina did their due diligence on Mayfield but they appear to be committed to Sam Darnold as their starter and whatever talks they had with he Browns fizzled quickly before the Panthers traded into the third round of the draft to select Ole Miss quarterback Matt Corral 94th overall.
Tampa Bay and Washington also inquired about Mayfield but that was before the Commanders acquired Carson Wentz from the Colts and Tom Brady unretired.
Browns executive vice president of football operations and general manager Andrew Berry has been clear about his willingness to be patient and not simply give the 2018 No 1 overall pick away.
Regardless of what happens, Mayfield s going to collect $18.858 million after the fifth-year option was picked up and fully guaranteed in April 2021.
Should the Browns release Mayfield, he could sign with any team for the minimum salary of $1.035 million with the Browns paying the balance of $17.823 million.
