Storms force Browns to take training camp indoors Friday

Day 12 news and notes

BEREA, Ohio (92.3 The Fan) – Heavy thunderstorms forced the Browns to move practice indoors Friday.

Although the indoor field was reduced to just 50 yards with the weight room relocation, head coach Kevin Stefanski seemed pleased with what they were able to accomplish during the two-hour full-padded practice.

“I thought we got more done than I anticipated,” Stefanski said after practice. “That place got bigger all of the sudden.

“The tempo was high; they were moving around. It helped that we had some goal-line, some red zone, some backed up [situations] so we really using that end of the endzone.”

The relocation of the session to the Casey Coleman Fieldhouse closed it to reporters as required by the COVID-19 health and safety protocols agreed upon by the NFL and NFLPA.

Red hot in the red zone – Quarterback Baker Mayfield threw three touchdowns during an 11-on-11 drill inside the five.

Mayfield connected with tight end Harrison Bryant for a pair of scores and tight end Stephen Carlson for a third touchdown.

Mayfield also threw a beautiful deep out ball to Odell Beckham Jr. for a 27-yard touchdown during a 7-on-7 drill.

Center of attention – As the season opener approaches rapidly, there hasn’t been much talk of center JC Tretter’s progress since he underwent knee surgery at the beginning of camp.

Rookie and fifth-round pick Nick Harris continues to take the reps with the first-team offense in Tretter’s absence. Although Tretter is a veteran, the question was asked Friday if he needs significant practice reps before the Sept. 13 opener in Baltimore.

“We’ll make those determinations game week,” Stefanski said, “but in the meantime, I think Nick’s doing a real nice job.”

Welcome back – After getting five players back on the field Thursday, a sixth returned Friday – receiver KhaDarel Hodge.

Hodge missed the previous six practices due to personal reasons.

Mum’s the word – Stefanski did not provide much of an update on linebacker Mack Wilson’s status declining to say if surgery will be required.

As for cornerback Greedy Williams, “he’s truly day-to-day” according to Stefanski. Williams suffered a shoulder injury during Monday’s practice.

Test drive – Sunday’s camp practice will be held at FirstEnergy Stadium at 1:25.

Puppy pound counter – Five more puppies were adopted on Friday from the northeast Ohio SPCA bringing the 12-day total to 73 for 2020 and 568 adoptions since the program was launched in 2015.

Injury report – LB Adrian Clayborn (groin), CB Kevin Johnson (liver), S Karl Joseph (foot), WR Jarvis Landry (hip), CB M.J. Stewart Jr. (hamstring), C JC Tretter (knee), CB Greedy Williams (shoulder) and LB Mack Wilson (knee) did not practice Friday according to the team.
