Cavs G Darius Garland named 2022 NBA All-Star

CLEVELAND, Ohio (92.3 The Fan) – Cavaliers guard Darius Garland has been named an NBA All-Star reserve for the Eastern Conference.

The announcement was made on TNT’s award-winning show Inside the NBA Thursday evening along with the rest of the reserves for the Eastern and Western Conference.

Garland, the Cavs first All-Star since LeBron James and Kevin Love in 2018, earns the honor in his third NBA season.

Reserves are selected through voting by NBA head coaches for their respective conferences.

Garland is averaging 19.8 points, 8.2 assists and 3.3 rebounds in 44 games this season. He is one of only two NBA players averaging at least 19.0 points on .460 shooting or better and 7.0 assists joining Nikola Jokić of the Denver Nuggets.

Garland has scored at least 20 points and had 10 assists eight times this season, which ranks third-most in the East, and his 16 double-doubles are more than twice as many as his first two NBA seasons combined.

Garland, who was named the NBA Eastern Conference Player of the Week for January 10-16, joined LeBron James as the only Cavaliers in the last 20 seasons to have five straight games of at least 10 assists and he became the fourth-youngest player in Cavaliers history to notch a triple-double in a win at Utah on January 12 behind LeBron James, Brad Daugherty and Kyrie Irving. He also is just the third player in NBA history to have a game of at least 27 points, 18 assists and five rebounds before age 22 during Cleveland’s victory at Oklahoma City on January 15 joining Trae Young and Luka Dončić.

Cavs rookie forward Evan Mobley and sophomore guard Isaac Okoro were selected by the league’s assistant coaches to participate in the Rising Stars three-game tournament Friday, February 18.

Cleveland is 31-21 on the season, in the fifth spot in the Eastern Conference, but just 2 full games behind No. 1 seeded Chicago.

The 2022 NBA All-Star game will be played February 20 at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse in downtown Cleveland.

The All-Star teams will be selected in a draft to be held February 10 with team captains LeBron James and Kevin Durant drafting from the pool of 22 players voted as starters and reserves in each conference.
