Cavs All-Star guard Donovan Mitchell named to All-NBA second team

CLEVELAND, Ohio (92.3 The Fan) – Cleveland Cavaliers All-Star guard Donovan Mitchell was named to the All-NBA second team the league announced Wednesday.

It is the first All-NBA selection of any kind for Mitchell, who becomes the fifth in Cavaliers franchise history to receive such an honor.

Mitchell appeared in 68 games during the 2022-23 season where he averaged a career-high 28.3 points and shot a career-best .484 from the field to go along with 4.4 assists, 4.3 rebounds and 1.46 steals.

Mitchell’s 245 three-point makes set a new single season franchise record.

The sixth-year guard was also the only NBA player this season averaging at least 25.0 points and 1.0 steals while shooting at least a .480 field goal percentage and .380 three-point percentage.

Mitchell recorded 13 games with at least 40 points during the season, marking the most 40-point games in a single season by a Cavalier and second-most 40-point games in the first season with a team in NBA history – Wilt Chamberlain had 32 games with 40+ points in 1959-60 with Philadelphia.

His 13 games with 40 or more points already ranks second in Cavaliers history for total 40-point games, behind only LeBron James who had 51 games with 40 or more points with Cleveland.

Mitchell completed his first season with the Cavs, who went 51-31 to earn the No. 4 seed in the Eastern Conference, following a blockbuster offseason trade last summer with the Utah jazz. He was also named an All-Star starter for the first time in his career this past season.

Mark Price, Brad Daugherty, LeBron James and Kyrie Irving are the only other players in team history to be named to an All-NBA team.
