No one will ever say Meleek Thomas lacks confidence. Whether it’s basketball, cooking, or push-up contests, the rookie from Arkansas University wants to be not only the best but undeniable.
“No mess-ups on defense. And once I do that, and it's like, yeah, there's no reason that I'm deniable.”
When Meleek says defense is the pathway, it’s not a gimmick; he means it. He’s said it a gazillion times… ok, maybe not that many. But he’s said it enough that I believe he understands his potential role on a Cavs team with plenty of guys tasked with scoring.
The rookie guard attended Arkansas University and played under the tutelage of John Calipari and alongside the 7th pick of the 2026 NBA Draft, Darius Acoff; there he averaged 15 points a game, but he led the team in steals per game at 1.5. In three preseason games, Thomas has averaged 2 steals a game, showing success in playing the passing lanes and creating turnover opportunities. But Thomas knows he has to get better if he wants to stay on the floor.
“What do I need to work on…I need to be more sharp about being early in my spots and limiting my defensive mistakes. Like not having NO mess-ups on defense. Once I do that, and it's like, yeah, there's no reason that I'm deniable. You want to limit everything to (where) you have no flaws in this game. Just maximize your game by continuously working.”
“My brother Shawndale (Jones) experience through basketball has acclimated me just because he was the first outlet for me. I didn't have a trainer.”
"Something that's going to carry me throughout the season, regardless, is the way I put the ball in the basket, it's easy for me to score and just my leadership. I want to be a leader, regardless of me being a rookie." #Cavs rookie Meleek Thomas w/ @jbsmooth84 on a strength that will help him through his first season

For a second pick, that’s quite the self-awareness, but it’s who he’s been so far. At Cavs Media Day, he echoed similar sentiments about getting on the floor for a team with aspirations of adding another championship banner.
“Be a pest on defense. This team needs defensive intensity. (If) we need that spark. We need that defense off the bench. We need somebody that we can count on. Because I've got to be trusted out there on defense before I can do anything offensively.”
It may be cliché, but defense wins championships. Across the street, the Guardians' run to the World Series ended in part due to crucial defensive mistakes in the ALCS against the Tampa Bay Rays.
Beyond focusing on defense as the reason he stays on the floor, Meleek Thomas, barely 100 days into turning 20, just got his driver's license, and when the Cavs spent Training Camp in Spain, it was his first trip outside the U.S.
“The trip to Spain was special. That was my first time out the country. It was just a blessing to be there. It was really for team bonding, for me and my teammates to get to know each other better on and off the court. Just vibe more, spend more time around each other, and just get some plays down and just get a better feel for everybody out there on the floor, always in a different country and different areas. So it was different. Time change was different. Just a different atmosphere. So I love my experience. Great food, and I will do it again for sure.”
Another thing we learned from Meleek is he loves to cook… kinda. The rookie from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (yes, he’s a Steelers fan; we’ll get to that later) hasn’t quite mastered lunch and dinner, but his culinary skills reign supreme at breakfast as long as French toast is involved. However, at a recent practice where we had a one-on-one, when asked what was for breakfast that day, the rookie said it was just a light day of applesauce, a banana, and a smoothie.
When the rookie isn’t working on his game or preparing for an episode of Chopped, you might catch him checking in on his football team. The rookie admits he didn’t watch the Browns' late-game victory over the Steelers on Thursday Night Football.
“I ain't even watched the game. I can say I trusted in my team to get that job done. So, you know, when you don't watch the game, and then you tune out everybody that say something to you. Your team still won, so good win, Steelers!”

With an infectious smile, he gives a high five to the Cavs pr personnel; it’s hard to root against the young man despite his rooting affiliations, and with 6 brothers, he’s no stranger to trash talk.
“Play my role, know who's on the floor with me at all times. I'm going to make my shots. I'm going to make timely reads, and just making the right read is going to really continue to keep the ball in my hands.”
However, the professional ranks are no stranger to Meleek; his older brother Shawndale Jones currently plays professional basketball for the Freseros Irapuato in Mexico. Jones is no slouch himself; in college he finished 10th in program history in scoring average for Indiana University Pennsylvania. Before suffering a season-ending knee injury in the 2021-22 season, he averaged 25 points over a 7-game span. Upon his return the following season, he led the PSAC (Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference) in points (634) and points/game (19.2) (634 points ranks fifth at IUP for a single season). He also led PSAC in steals (61) and steals/game (1.85); 61 steals rank 11th in IUP single-season history.
5 years later, Shawndale gets to watch his brother chase his dream and complete the goal big brother set for him.
“So my big brother, he always told me, ‘I want him to be better than me.’ And it's getting to that point, so I ain't tell him that, but he always did his best in paving the way for me, and acclimating me to just have that hunger and drive that I'll never lose.”
According to Meleek, his dad introduced them to the game of basketball, but watching his brother fall in love with the game was his gateway to the court.
“My dad would show me and my brothers the ropes when it come to basketball. But other than that, it's like he was the one to fall in love with it first. I was the one to fall in love with the second. So for him to be first, I went to his game. I seen everything he did. I loved everything he did. I wanted the shoes he wear. I wanted to eat what he was eating after the games. That's really always been my role model. So I just seen how passionate he was for the game. That brought that same fire and passion to me. And just like my little brother coming up after me, I want him to be better than me.”
So who is Meleek Thomas, well on this particular rainy day in Cleveland he was blessed and highly favored, but he told who he was on media day.
“I am who I am, who God made me to be. A special, special person. A very special human. God-fearing. Yeah, I really take pride in everything that I do. Whatever I put my heart and mind to, it's really going to be on display”
My brother was always my role model; it’s where I got my drive and hunger
