CLEVELAND, OH - Never say die. Six hours into the doubleheader between the Cleveland Guardians and Detroit Tigers, the Guardians’ offense came alive, as the team scored all four of its runs in the bottom of the 8th inning to comeback and win, 4-1, over the Tigers in Game 2.
Guardians starting pitcher Xzavion Curry (3-1, 3.24) had a masterful performance, throwing six innings and striking out six hitters, as the right hander continues his transition back into the rotation from the bullpen. He also allowed just five hits, two walks and one run.
The lone run that Curry allowed came courtesy of Tigers outfielder Andy Ibanez RBI double to right field that got lost in a miscommunication between Guardians outfielders Will Brennan and Oscar Gonzalez. Curry did not let that get to him, however, as he only had one inning with more than 15 pitches thrown.
Brennan and Gonzalez both were able to make things right in the 8th inning, leading the four run charge by the club. Gonzalez was able to beat out a double play at first base to keep a base runner on base, and Brennan had a two RBI double to give the Guardians their first lead of the doubleheader.
Another key hit came off the bat of Guardians rookie infielder Brayan Rocchio, who was able to knock in Gonzalez on a game tying RBI single. Rocchio had struck out in his six previous at bats between the both games.
For the Tigers, starting pitcher Joey Wentz (2-10, 6.62) was fantastic, throwing five innings and allowing just four hits, two walks, and striking out three. Tigers reliever Jose Cisnero (2-4, 4.89) was given the loss and allowed three runs in an inning of work.
What’s next?
The Guardians will turn to another right handed rookie starting pitcher with Tanner Bibee (9-2, 2.90) on the hill at Progressive Field. The Tigers will counter with right handed starting pitcher Matt Manning (4-4, 4.60). First pitch from Cleveland will come at 7:10 PM.
Will Brennan, Brayan Rocchio, and Gabriel Arias all had RBIs in the 8th inning for the Guardians.
