CLEVELAND, Ohio (92.3 The Fan) – The Cleveland Guardians finalized a trade on Monday to acquire pitcher Yohan Ramirez from the Seattle Mariners.
The Guardians made the swap with Seattle in exchange for cash considerations or a player to be named later, and Ramirez will be immediately optioned to Triple-A Columbus.
Ramirez has spent parts of the last three seasons with the Mariners after making his MLB debut on July 24, 2020 and owns a career 3.97 ERA in 56.2 innings over 48 relief appearances. He’s allowed 25 earned runs on 34 hits while striking out 71 batters and issuing 38 free passes. Ramirez boasts an 11.3 k/9 innings.
The right-hander has gone 1-0 with a 7.56 ERA, six walks and ten strikeouts in seven relief appearances this season after making the Mariners’ Opening Day roster.
Seattle selected Ramirez in the 2019 Rule 5 Draft from Houston after four seasons with the Astros.
Ramirez recorded his first win on April 23rd when he tossed a scoreless inning in the Mariners 5-4 win over the Kansas City Royals.
Ramirez faced five batters, striking out and walking two while throwing threw 21 pitches.
The 27-year-old native of the Dominican Republic has produced scoreless efforts in four of his seven appearances while giving up multiple earned runs in the other three, prior to being designated for assignment on May 13th.
To make room on the 40-man roster for Ramirez, the Guardians moved pitcher James Karinchak to the 60-day injured list. Karinchak has been bothered by a right shoulder strain and has yet to make an appearance for the Guardians this season.
