CLEVELAND, Ohio (92.3 The Fan) – Guardians second baseman Andres Gimenez will start at second base for the American League in Tuesday’s All-Star Game.
Gimenez replaces Astros eight-time All-Star Jose Altuve, who was hit on the left knee leading off Thursday’s game against the Los Angeles Angels and did not play Friday night.
At 23 years old, Gimenez becomes the youngest second baseman to start an All-Star game since Roberto Alomar in 1992.
Gimenez, acquired last year as part of the trade that sent shortstop Francisco Lindor to the New York Mets, has emerged this season as a rising star hitting .299 with 10 homers and 43 RBIs in 78 games, including.384 with runners in scoring position.
Defensively, Gimenez has been spectacular flashing the leather, including leaping to snare a line drive in Friday night’s 6-5 come-from-behind victory over the Tigers that also saw him drive in the game winning run in the seventh inning with a single.
Gimenez will be joined at Dodger Stadium by a pair of teammates – third baseman Jose Ramirez and closer Emmanuel Clase.
Ramirez will compete in the All-Star Home Run Derby Monday night.
