CLEVELAND, OH - The Cleveland Guardians have called up top prospect Kyle Manzardo from Triple-A Columbus on Monday, and he will make his debut on Monday night against the Detroit Tigers, batting seventh as the designated hitter.
Manzardo has been tearing up Triple-A pitching this season, hitting .303 with ten doubles, nine home runs and a 1.017 OPS in 29 games. Of his nine home runs, eight of them have been hit in his last 14 games, along with six doubles, 14 RBI, and a .364 batting average.
The left-handed hitting first baseman is the Guardians second ranked prospect according to MLB.com. He was acquired from the Tampa Bay Rays on July 31, 2023 for starting pitcher Aaron Civale.
In order for Manzardo to be called up, the Guardians placed outfielder Steven Kwan on the 15-day injured list with an acute left hamstring strain. Kwan is expected to miss approximately four weeks with the injury.
Kwan, 26, was injured on May 4 making a defensive play in left field. He has been having a career season, including having the third best batting average in baseball (.353).
Additionally, relief pitcher Peter Strzelecki was sent back down Triple-A Columbus and left-handed reliever Sam Hentges was activated off the injured list. Hentges, 27, has yet to pitch in 2024 after dealing with middle finger inflammation after four appearances this spring.
He had six scoreless rehab appearances in Double-A Akron and Triple-A Columbus, where he allowed only two hits and struck out seven batters across 6.2 innings.
