CLEVELAND, OH - The Cleveland Guardians (58-64) fell to the Detroit Tigers (55-66), 4-2, in game one of a doubleheader at Progressive Field on Friday.
Tigers starting pitcher Tarik Skubal picked up the win, allowing just one run in the first inning off an Oscar Gonzalez single. Skubal only surrendered three hits to the Guardians, while walking one batter and striking out seven.
Guardians starting pitcher Gavin Williams struggled in the first inning, allowing three runs in the top of the first inning, including a leadoff solo home run from Tigers outfielder Akil Baddoo. The three runs allowed were the most the rookie has allowed since July 8th when he allowed three runs to the Royals.
Tigers 2020 number one overall pick Spencer Torkelson had an RBI single in the first inning followed by a future Tigers Hall of Famer Miguel Cabrera RBI double to make it a three run lead.
Williams pitched five innings for the Guardians, while giving up six hits and two walks and striking out four. The rookie was able to bounce back after the first inning, allowing just two hits in four innings.
The Guardians will look to starting pitcher Xzavion Curry (3-1, 3.39) to try to split the doubleheader with the Tigers, who start left handed pitcher Joey Wentz (2-10, 7.03).
Williams had an 1.59 ERA in August coming into Friday's doubleheader against Detroit.
