Thursday night’s Cleveland Guardians game against the Detroit Tigers has been washed out before any baseball was able to be played. The game will instead move to Friday, August 18 for a traditional double header starting at 4:10 pm.
The squad was set to start the four game home series with Detroit following the two game split in Cincinnati. If the Guardians decide to stick with their original line-up for Thursday’s game, Xavion Curry (3-1, 3.39 ERA) would get the start for game one followed by another rookie, Gavin Williams (1-3, 2.80), in game two.
Catcher Cam Gallagher left Wednesday’s game vs. the Red’s to undergo precautionary concussion testing. The team later placed Gallagher on the 7-day injured list with a concussion. Zack Collins was recalled from Triple-A Columbus to fill the hole as backup to Bo Naylor till Gallagher is cleared to play.
Bryan Lavastida was considered for the job, but Terry Francona said they did not want to interrupt the progression Lavastida has been making in Columbus if it was only going to be for the week Gallagher is expected to miss.
Cal Quantrill is continuing to rehab his shoulder injury in the minors. In his most recent start on Tuesday, Quantrill pitched 3.2 innings for the Akron RubberDucks in their 4-2 victory over the Erie Sea Wolves. Francona announced that Quantrill will pitch again on Sunday, but where is still being decided. The two possibilities for the right handed pitcher are either to stay with Akron, or travel to Syracuse, NY to throw for Columbus. The goal is to have Quantrill up to 85 pitches on Sunday.
In addition to Quantrill, Shane Bieber (elbow) and Triston Mckenzie (elbow) are advancing their way back from their injuries slowly but surely. Terry Francona said, “they’re not ready for bullpens yet, but that’s on the horizon.”
