CLEVELAND, Ohio (92.3 The Fan) – A pair of Guardians won monthly awards for April on Monday.
Third baseman Jose Ramirez, fresh off signing a five-year, $124 million extension, was named the American League Player of the Month and outfielder Steven Kwan was named the American League Rookie of the Month.
Ramirez hit .342 with seven home runs, 28 RBIs, 15 extra-base hits and registered a .722 slugging percentage over 21 games to begin the season. He led baseball in RBIs while ranking second in OPS. He tied for second in home runs and ranked in the top-five in the American League in batting average.
Ramirez became just the fifth in Major League history to drive in 20 or more runs in his team’s first 11 games of the season joining former Indians outfielder Manny Ramirez (1999) and Hall of Famers Willie Mays (1964), Lou Gehrig (1927) and Bobby Doerr (1941).
Kwan hit .354 with 10 runs scored, five doubles and a triple while driving in seven and finishing his first month in the majors with a .500 slugging percentage.
Kwan reached base 18 times in his first five games, setting a new American League record dating back to 1901.
