Guardians shuffle roster prior to Friday's matchup with Rays

The Guardians activated a couple of familiar faces from the injured list on Friday afternoon.

CLEVELAND, OH - As the month turns to September and rosters expand to 28 players, the Cleveland Guardians announced a bevy of moves on Friday afternoon.

The club activated starting pitcher Cal Quantrill and utility player David Fry from the 15-day and 10-day injured lists respectively. Pitchers Hunter Gaddis and Cody Morris were both optioned to AAA Columbus, while infielder Jose Tena was recalled from AAA Columbus.

Following the team’s waiver claims on Thursday, relief pitchers Reynaldo Lopez and Matt Moore were added to the roster, as well. New starting pitcher Lucas Giolito will join the rotation next week, facing off against the Minnesota Twins, who also put a claim in for the right-hander.

Quantrill, 28, has made 13 starts in 2023, but has struggled throughout the season. The right-hander has a 2-6 record with a 6.45 ERA and 38 strikeouts in 67 innings. He has been on the injured list since July 6. He will start on Friday night for the Guardians against the Tampa Bay Rays.

Fry, 27, has had a successful rookie season for the Guardians, batting .250, with four home runs and 13 RBI in 42 games for the club. Fry has been on the IL since August 8th, but his versatility will be welcomed back to the club, as he has demonstrated with playing time in the outfield, as well as catching, and first & third base.

First pitch from Progressive Field between the Cleveland Guardians and Tampa Bay Rays will be at 7:10 PM as Quantrill faces off against Rays ace starting pitcher Tyler Glasnow.
