The Cleveland Guardians announced a pair of roster moves on Thursday afternoon.
The club confirmed its acquiring of right-hander Darren McCaughan from the Miami Marlins. McCaughan, who was traded from Miami for cash considerations, was subsequently optioned to the Guardians' Triple-A affiliate in Columbus. Meanwhile, starting pitcher Gavin Williams was transferred to the 60-day injured list with right elbow inflammation.
Williams, who had suffered an elbow injury during Guardians spring training, had been working toward returning to the injury-riddled Cleveland rotation before being shut down last week with elbow soreness.
McCaughan, 28, was acquired by Miami from the Seattle Mariners prior to Spring Training. After making 5 starts (1-2, 6.14 ERA) in Triple-A Jacksonville, McCaughan made his only relief appearance for the Marlins on May 4 at Oakland, in which he allowed eight runs in 4.2 innings. McCaughan was designated for assignment on May 5.
McCaughan has pitched in six major league games across three seasons with Seattle (2021, '23) and Miami ('24), sporting a 9.16 earned run average over 18.2 innings.
