On the Thursday deadline for MLB roster expansions growing to 28 players for the remainder of the season, the Cleveland Guardians called up pitching prospect Cody Morris and utility player Ernie Clement from Triple-A Columbus.
Right-hander Anthony Castro has been designated for assignment.
Morris, 25, was activated from the 60-day injured list, from which he was recovering from a right shoulder/upper back strain the right-hander suffered back in March. In his 15.1 innings over six rehab outings with the Columbus Clippers this season, Morris has allowed only 11 baserunners while recording 30 strikeouts.
"It's a dream come true. I've been hurt a lot, ups and downs, lots of bumps in the road," Morris said on Wednesday during his first appearance to Progressive Field. "But to make it here is really a dream come true."
Clement returns to the major league roster after being sent down to Triple-A back in early August. In 59 games with Cleveland this season, Clement has posted a .203/.268/.244 slash line, along with playing a variety of field positions, including 15 runs scored and six runs batted in.
Castro, 27, was acquired in the Guardians' Opening Day trade that sent outfielder Bradley Zimmer to the Toronto Blue Jays. Castro appeared in 12 games for Cleveland, sporting a 7.43 earned run average in 13.1 innings of relief.
