CLEVELAND (92.3 The Fan) – One bad hop from the baseball was the turning point for the Indians on Friday night.
That lousy hop off the bat of Christian Yelich in the seventh inning -- that went past Indians first baseman Carlos Santana -- led the Milwaukee Brewers to secure a 7-1 win over the Cleveland Indians.
Milwaukee (18-19) opened the seventh with a Keston Hura RBI double off Indians pitcher Phil Maton (2-1). In the next at-bat, Yelich hit the ball that took a bounce in the opposite direction of Santana, which led to the Brewers to add two more runs.
“It was a chopper and (Santana) tried to sang it, but the ball stayed down,” Indians interim manager Sandy Alomar said. “It was a weird bounce; it cost us an opportunity to get out of the inning there – unfortunately, that didn’t happen.
“The ball just took a weird bounce and all hell broke loose.”
Ryan Braun added an RBI single to score Yelich and Milwaukee ended the inning with a 5-1 lead.
The Brewers added more runs to the scoreboard in the eighth on a two-run home run by Hura to give them a 7-1 lead.
Carlos Carrasco had a decent outing for Cleveland. The 34-year-old pitched six innings, giving up an earned run, six hits, and seven strikeouts.
“He started a little show out of the box,” Alomar said. “He was able to manage traffic (in the strike zone) coming back and go a double-play ball and strikeouts when he needed to get out of it.”
Carrasco’s only run allowed was in the fourth on an RBI groundout by Urias that drove in Jedd Gyorko.
“My breaking balls, sliders and changeups, were working really well today,” Carrasco said. “A couple of those went for double plays, while some of those went for base hits. It was really good; that’s what I’m looking for with my changeup and slider, and my fastball is feeling really good, too.”
Cleveland’s (23-15) offense went quiet in the game as Brewers starting pitcher Corbin Burnes silent the Indians bats.
Burnes tossed six innings for Milwaukee with an unearned run and struck out seven.
The Indians scored their only run of the game on a throwing error by Milwaukee catcher Jacob Nottingham that allowed Tyler Naquin to score in the fifth. They also had two batters reach base from the seventh on – Franmil Reyes walk and Oscar Mercado single – while the rest of the offense went quiet.
Jose Ramirez, Francisco Lindor and Santana went for a combined 0-for-12 at the plate.
