Former Cleveland All-Star pitcher Doug Jones has passed away, the Guardians announced on Monday afternoon.
"We are saddened by the loss of one of our orgs all-time greats, Doug Jones," the team said. "His 129 saves is 3rd in franchise history. He was a member of the club's Top 100 roster, celebrated in 2001. He enjoyed 16 big league seasons, 7 in Cleveland (1986-1991, 98) including 3X as an All-Star."
Drafted by the Brewers in 1978, Jones spent most of his 16 seasons as a relief pitcher, primarily working as a closer. He also spent time with the Orioles, Phillies, Cubs, Athletics, Astros, and Brewers. He finished his career with a 3.30 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 909 strikeouts in over 1,100 innings. He made the All-Star game in three consecutive seasons with Cleveland (1988-1990) and had a career-best 43 saves in 1990. Jones was 64.
