Terry Francona: Indians pitchers should be unaffected by MLB's crackdown on sticky substances

CLEVELAND, Ohio (92.3 The Fan) – As Major League Baseball begins its crackdown on the use of sticky substances Monday, Indians manager Terry Francona isn’t worried about how his pitchers will be affected by the new guidelines.

“We stepped in a while back and talked to our guys,” Francona said Monday afternoon prior to their series opener with the Cubs at Wrigley Field. “We knew this was coming so we’ve dealt with it internally to stay ahead of it.”

Umpires will be checking pitchers after innings or when they leave the game – or between batters if there is suspicion of using a substance during an at-bat. Closers will be checked when they take the mound.

Overall, Francona doesn’t think the new rules or scrutiny of pitchers in baseball will be problematic, but that doesn’t mean there won’t be confrontations with umpires.

“I think everybody the first night will certainly be on their best behavior,” Francona said. “Everybody’s watching. I’m sure there’s going to come a day when it’s a hot day and everybody’s a little irritable, something will probably happen. MLB’s been pretty open that there might be a hiccup or two.

“Something will happen, I’m sure. I hope it’s not with us.”

Any pitcher found to be using anything illegal will be suspended for 10 days with pay but their team may not replace them on the roster.
