CLEVELAND, Ohio (92.3 The Fan) - The Cleveland Indians traded relief pitcher Phil Matonand catching prospect Yanier Diaz to the Houston Astros in exchange for outfielder/shortstop Myles Straw just before Friday's trade deadline.

The club announced the trade after the deadline passed at 4 p.m.


Maton, 28, was Cleveland's second player traded on Friday after Eddie Rosario was dealt to Atlanta for Pablo Sandoval.

The right-hander joined the Tribe via a 2019 trade from the San Diego Padres and went 5-3 over his three years with Cleveland. In 75.1 innings with the Indians, Maton recorded 20 walks and 61 strikeouts. For the 2021 season, Maton had gone 2-0 with a 4.57 earned run average over 38 appearances.

Straw, meanwhile, had been with the Astros since 2018 and has primarily worked in the outfield. The 26-year-old batted .256 with three home runs, 50 runs batted in, 33 stolen bases, and 83 runs scored. In 98 games with Houston this season, Straw batted .262 and drove in 34 RBIs.

As for Diaz, the 22-year-old catching prospect had worked in Cleveland's minor league system since 2017. In 61 games with Cleveland' Low-A affiliate Lynchburg this year, Diaz batted .314 with five homers and 50 RBIs.
