Imagine being so shocked to receive a phone call on one of the biggest nights of your life, and not even believing it was a legitimate call. That's exactly what was going through the head of Cole Strange.
While everyone was frankly surprised by the Patriots selecting the guard out of UT-Chattanooga, no one may have been more shocked as Strange was. When he got a call from an unknown number, Strange was skeptical, thinking it may have been his friend's prank calling him, but once Bill Belichick got on the line, he knew it was the real deal.
Cole's father, Greg, spoke on just how surprised his son was to receive the phone call from the Pats, per MassLive.
“(Cole) said, ‘Sir, I don’t mean to be disrespectful at all, but I’ve gotta know because I’ve got some crazy friends. Is this a prank?’ The guy said, ‘Hold on just a second.’ And then Bill Belichick got on the phone and of course, unless you’ve been under a rock for the last 20 years, you know Bill Belichick’s voice."
“As soon as I heard Bill Belichick’s voice, Cole and I both started screaming and hugging and acting crazy. Probably saying a bunch of inappropriate stuff. We were so excited. To his credit, you’ve gotta love the guy, Belichick is sitting there and when we got through, the first break he had, he said, ‘Hey Cole, you’ve gotta act like you’ve been there, man.’ It was classic to us. We absolutely loved it.”
Strange, a First Team All-Conference performer, was ranked one of the best guards in the draft but wasn't projected to be taken until at least the second round. Strange looks to be a major part of the offense in year one after New England lost offensive guard Shaq Mason in free agency, creating a huge hole on the offensive line.
