JJ Arcega-Whiteside’s Eagles career—at least as a wide receiver—is over. Arcega-Whiteside, who was famously drafted ahead of Pro Bowlers DK Metcalf, Diontae Johnson and Hunter Renfrow in 2019, will transition to tight end this season, according to Jeff McClane of the Philadelphia Inquirer. He joins a crowded Eagles tight end room occupied by starter Dallas Goedert, Jack Stoll, Noah Togiai, veteran Richard Rodgers and former quarterback Tyree Jackson.

Widely acknowledged as a draft bust, Arcega-Whiteside played sparingly last season, with the vast majority of his 170 offensive snaps coming as a run-blocker. On top of those responsibilities, the Stanford alum played extensively on special teams, contributing five tackles and a forced fumble in that role.

Seeing the writing on the wall for him at receiver, JAW has embraced the change, hopeful that his size (6’2”/225) and blocking expertise will serve him well at his new position. Arcega-Whiteside will look to follow the blueprint laid out by Darren Waller and Logan Thomas, who have both made successful transitions to tight end in recent years.

Reinventing himself won’t be easy, but after three years of hitting his head against the wall at wide receiver (16 catches for 290 yards and a single touchdown on 35 career targets), what other choice does the 25-year-old have?
