The NBA’s COVID outbreak has led to the Boston Celtics signing 40-year-old sharpshooter Joe Johnson, who last played in the NBA in 2018, to a 10-day contract.
It was a pleasant surprise for many fans to see Johnson’s name surface on Wednesday morning and it led to calls for more older players who are not too far removed from the game.
Particularly, fans want to see Jamal Crawford signed next.
Crawford, 41, has actually played more recently than Johnson, appearing in a game with the Nets in 2019 and playing in 64 gams with the Phoenix Suns in the 2018-19 season.
At one point on Wednesday morning he was trending on Twitter as fans expressed their desire to see him back on the court as well.
Crawford even told Stephen Jackson on his Showtime podcast on Tuesday that he could play if called upon and that a team even expressed interest in him over the summer.
It is clear teams are looking at all avenues to find players to fill in as COVID tears through the league. It is certainly not out of the realm of possibility that Crawford could get the call soon enough.
