Francisco Lindor labored through another hitless night on Tuesday, including a costly strikeout with the bases loaded and one out, with the Mets trailing by one in the bottom of the eight.
Lindor, who now holds an OPS of just .708 on the season, was expected to be the Mets’ offensive anchor in the middle of the lineup alongside Pete Alonso. Instead, he has been a below average hitter in 2023, and Gio wonders if he will ever be much better than that.
“I think we’ve probably seen the best of Francisco Lindor in Cleveland,” Gio said. “He’s never gonna be better than he was there. We might have seen the best of Francisco Lindor last season. I don’t know if he’s ever gonna be better than that season. That was a good season, not a great season.”
Between Lindor and Max Scherzer’s struggles, Gio is convinced that the Mets won’t be able to win anything with their high-priced stars seemingly moving beyond their prime and on the decline, Lindor at a much earlier point in his career than Scherzer.
“I don’t think what they have now is going to be good enough to compete at all,” Gio said. “Maybe they squeeze into a Wild card, but right now, they’re just not good enough to compete for a World Series. They’re not even close.
“It’s the only way the Mets get themselves back into any sort of contention this year is on the backs of those guys, and do you think they can turn it around?”
