As multiple teams’ trade deadline approaches blow up in their faces, the Chicago Cubs are looking like geniuses right now.
The Cubs got hot leading into the deadline, prompting them to keep Cody Bellinger off the market and buy. They added Jeimer Candelario, the unequivocal best third baseman available at the deadline, while retaining other pieces needed for a playoff push like Marcus Stroman.
The Cubs have since won six straight dating back to deadline day, including a complete dismantling of a Reds team that previously led them in the standings. And after drubbing the MLB-best Braves over the weekend, the Cubs now sit in a share of the final wild card spot with Cincinnati, and they only trail the Central-leading Brewers by 1.5 games.
Although the pieces have been there much of this season for Chicago, it now feels like the Cubs finally are putting it all together. Audacy MLB insider Jon Heyman said Monday in his weekly appearance on The Mully & Haugh Show that the division title is something they could win going away.
“I think they’re probably the best team in that division, they could easily win that division," Heyman said. "They won seven in a row, came at the right time, convinced them not to be a seller. Made the right move.
"They got a good offensive player in Candelario coming back in a market when there really wasn’t anybody better than him offensively in the market once Bellinger was pulled off. So good job by the Cubs, all the reason to have faith they’ll be a playoff team.”
