The Washington Football Team is expected to release veteran quarterback Alex Smith, who still wants to continue his playing career, Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network reported Monday. And a match with the Bears could be in play, Rapoport said.
“You want to talk about a potential, potential place he could land?” Rapoport said on the NFL Network. “Obviously, you’re going to have teams interested if he wants to play. I would keep an eye on the Chicago Bears, simply because of Matt Nagy, his role there as the head coach and a former coach for Alex Smith in Kansas City. They still need a quarterback, and it would make some sense.”
Nagy coached Smith for five seasons, as they were each in Kansas City from 2013-’17.
Smith, who turns 37 in May, won the NFL Comeback Player of the Year award in 2020, when he returned to action after suffering a gruesome leg injury in a game in 2018 that led to a life-threatening infection. Smith missed all of the 2019 season but kept working toward a return, and he accomplished his goal and appeared in 11 games for Washington in 2020. Smith played in eight games and started six, in which Washington went 5-1. He completed 66.7% of his passes for 1,582 yards, six touchdowns and eight interceptions.
